Background blur

Blur the Background of a Photo

Soften a busy background or hide the room behind a subject. Paint the area you want to blur and the tool does the rest, locally in your browser.

Blur a background now

Keep the subject sharp and blur the rest

A blurred background pulls attention to the subject and hides details you would rather not share: a messy room, a street sign, a screen, or a passer-by.

There is no automatic subject cut-out in this tool. You decide what counts as background by painting over it in partial blur mode, which keeps the result predictable and avoids the halo that automatic masks often leave around hair and edges.

Full-image blur

A quick, uniform soft focus for the whole frame.

Brush mask

A sharp subject on a soft background, with the edge where you place it.

Presets and styles

Three blur strengths and three blur types, all previewed before you download.

How to blur a background

Upload, paint, adjust, export.

  1. 1

    Upload the photo

Drop in a JPG, PNG, WebP, or GIF file.

One image at a time: the uploader accepts a single file per session.

  2. 2

    Pick full or partial blur

Use Full blur to soften the whole frame, or Partial blur to keep the subject sharp.

Partial blur is the mode to choose when only the background should be affected.

  3. 3

    Paint the background

Brush over everything behind the subject, then tidy the outline with the eraser.

A smaller brush gives a cleaner edge around shoulders and hair; a larger one covers flat areas faster.

  4. 4

    Set the strength and download

Choose a blur type and a light, medium, or heavy preset, then export the PNG.

Presets apply 5px, 15px, or 30px of blur, and the preview updates live.

What you control

Full-image blur

Soften the entire photo in one step, useful for thumbnails, placeholders, or a uniform defocused look.

Brush mask

Only painted pixels are blurred, so the subject stays as sharp as the original.

Eraser

Trim the mask around edges and fine detail without starting over.

Depth without a lens

Light and medium presets imitate a shallow depth of field; the heavy preset hides the background completely.

Background blur questions

Does the tool remove the background automatically?+

No. Smart blur detects text, not subjects, so background blur is done by painting over the background in partial blur mode. That keeps the edge exactly where you place it.

What is the difference between full blur and partial blur?+

Full blur applies the effect to the whole image. Partial blur applies it only to the mask you paint, which is how a subject stays sharp.

How strong should the blur be?+

Light (5px) keeps some context, medium (15px) makes the background unreadable at a glance, and heavy (30px) removes almost all detail. Medium is a good starting point for portraits.

Can I blur the background of several photos at once?+

Not in this version. The uploader accepts one image at a time, and each image gets its own mask.

Is the photo uploaded anywhere?+

No. Processing happens in the browser on a canvas, and the file is discarded when you refresh the page or use Remove.
